Keyboard Intermittent Keys

Summary

Framework laptop users experience intermittent or completely non-functional keys. On the Framework Laptop 13, this most commonly affects the right side of the keyboard — Enter, Backspace, Delete, D, and quotation mark (column 14 of the keyboard matrix), as well as P, 0, and minus (column 13)¹². The issue has been reported across all FW13 generations and across multiple operating systems¹³⁴. Framework co-founder Nirav Patel confirmed in February 2025 that the root cause was traced to a subsupplier issue where some Input Cover parts had a burr in the lattice near the Delete key, and additional quality checks have been added⁵.

On the Framework Laptop 16, a separate failure pattern affects the D key most commonly, with evidence suggesting heat from gaming accelerates failures on keys near the heat pipe (Q, W, Caps Lock, D)⁶⁷. On the Framework Laptop 12, the keyboard only supports 2-key rollover due to its matrix design, causing missed keystrokes during fast typing⁸.

Symptoms

• Keys intermittently stop registering, particularly Enter, Backspace, Delete, D, equals, right bracket, quotation mark (column 14) or P, 0, minus (column 13)¹²⁹
• Issue can progress from intermittent to completely non-functional over time¹
• Flexing or twisting the input cover / laptop frame temporarily restores function¹⁰¹¹
• Loosening or tightening input cover screws can temporarily affect the issue¹²¹³
• Problem is reproducible in UEFI/BIOS and at boot (GRUB), confirming it is a hardware issue¹⁴

Root Cause

Framework co-founder Nirav Patel provided an official statement in February 2025⁵:

We traced the root cause of this back to a subsupplier issue where some Input Cover parts had a burr in the lattice near the delete key. We've since added additional quality checks. If you're running into this, you can reach out to support to confirm if this is the issue you are seeing and then receive a replacement Input Cover.⁵

Community investigation identified additional contributing factors:

• Keyboard matrix line failures — Affected keys consistently map to specific columns in the keyboard matrix (column 13 or 14), pointing to breaks or intermittent contact in shared signal lines⁹²
• Flat cable connector solder joints — One user resolved the issue by reflowing the solder joints on the keyboard-to-mainboard flat flex cable connector¹⁸
• Frame flex causing intermittent contact — The modular input design may create a structurally weaker region, especially on the right side where USB-C docking/charging cables attach and apply bending force¹⁵
• FW16 heat-related failure — Keys near the heat pipe (Q, W, Caps Lock, D) degrade faster under sustained CPU/GPU load. Multiple users report failures on replacement keyboards at the same key, suggesting a design-level thermal issue⁶⁷
• FW12 matrix limitation — The FW12 keyboard uses a cheaper matrix design supporting only 2-key rollover, causing missed keystrokes during fast typing. Pogo pin connections cause additional intermittent failures⁸

Diagnosis

1. Check every key when the issue occurs, including rarely-used ones. Compare against the keyboard matrix chart to identify which column/row is affected⁹
2. Test in UEFI/BIOS and a Live USB to rule out OS-level issues¹⁹²⁰
3. Reseat all 3 connectors — keyboard cable to touchpad board, and both ends of the touchpad-to-mainboard cable (see Input Cover Replacement Guide, steps 6-8)²¹
4. Try flexing the frame — if bending the bottom-right corner inward temporarily restores keys, it confirms a hardware connection issue¹⁰¹¹
5. Try a full reset sequence — clean the keyboard thoroughly, reconnect all touchpad cables, reset BIOS to defaults, then perform a mainboard reset. Test at keyboard.frame.work/test after each step²²
6. If reseating does not help and the issue persists in UEFI, the fault is in the input cover hardware¹⁴

Resolution

Framework has acknowledged the root cause as a subsupplier manufacturing defect and added quality checks⁵. Users experiencing this issue should contact Framework Support for a replacement Input Cover, including if the unit is out of warranty — Framework has made exceptions for this known manufacturing defect²⁴.
