Keyboard Intermittent Keys (Framework Laptop 13)
Summary
Some Framework Laptop 13 users experience intermittent or completely non-functional keys, most commonly on the right side of the keyboard (Enter, Backspace, Delete, equals, right bracket, quotation mark). The issue affects all Intel generations (11th, 12th, 13th) and has been reported across multiple operating systems1.
Symptoms
- Keys intermittently stop registering, particularly Enter, Backspace, Delete
- Issue can progress from intermittent to completely non-functional over time
- Flexing or twisting the input cover / laptop frame temporarily restores function2[^14]
- Problem is reproducible in UEFI/BIOS and at boot (GRUB), confirming it is a hardware issue3
Affected Models
- Framework Laptop 13 (11th Gen Intel) — most commonly reported
- Framework Laptop 13 (12th Gen Intel)
- Framework Laptop 13 (13th Gen Intel)
Root Cause
The issue appears to be a physical connection problem in the input cover assembly. The keyboard flat cable connects to the touchpad board, and signals pass through to the mainboard via an intermediate ribbon cable4. Failure points include:
- The keyboard membrane or traces within the input cover[^12]
- The ribbon cable between the input cover and touchpad board (can be damaged by folding)5
- Frame flex causing intermittent contact — the modular input design may create a structurally weaker region, especially on the right side where USB-C docking/charging cables attach and apply bending force6
One user reported replacing 3 keyboards across multiple Framework 13 units over ~3 years, describing the issue as "systemic" rather than "occasional"7. Framework has not publicly acknowledged a design defect.
Diagnosis
- Test in UEFI/BIOS and a Live USB to rule out OS-level issues[^4][^7]
- Reseat all 3 connectors — keyboard cable to touchpad board, and both ends of the touchpad-to-mainboard cable (see Input Cover Replacement Guide, steps 6-8)4
- If reseating does not help and the issue persists in UEFI, the fault is in the input cover hardware
Workarounds & Fixes
| Solution | Effectiveness | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Reseat connectors4 | Temporary or none | Checks all 3 connections in the chain |
| Flex/twist the frame2[^14]6 | Temporary | Bending the bottom-right corner inward can restore keys |
| Replace the input cover[^12]2 | Appears to resolve | Multiple users confirmed replacement fixed the issue |
Resolution
Replacing the input cover assembly appears to resolve the issue in most cases2[^12]. Framework support has been known to send replacement input covers free of charge for units under warranty. For out-of-warranty units, replacement input covers can be purchased from the Framework Marketplace.
