Framework Laptop 16 (AMD Ryzen AI 300, 2025)
Announced in August 202512, the second generation Framework Laptop 16 features AMD's Zen 5-based Ryzen AI 300 series processors. It adds an optional Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU module with 8 GB GDDR71[^5] (and a 12 GB GDDR7 variant added April 202634), both backwards compatible with the 2024 model4. Shipments began in December 2025 (delayed from the original November target).
A Ryzen AI 5 340 entry-level CPU option was added on April 21, 20263.
Wi-Fi correction
This model ships with Wi-Fi 7 (AMD RZ717 / MediaTek MT7925), not the Wi-Fi 6E (RZ616) of the original Ryzen 7040 FW1656.

Expansion Bay
The expansion bay enables users to swap discrete GPUs1. Options include:
- Default shell (no dGPU) — reduced noise fans
- AMD Radeon RX 7700S Graphics Module 2nd Gen (8 GB GDDR6) — reduced noise, PTM7950 thermal pad
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop Graphics Module (8 GB GDDR7) — 100 W sustained TGP, PTM7950[^5]
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop Graphics Module (12 GB GDDR7) — announced April 2026, shipments from June 202634
- Dual M.2 adapter
- Framework OCuLink Dev Kit — PCIe x8 (128 Gbps) for external GPUs/peripherals (pre-order)10
Display Kit 2nd Gen
The 2nd Gen Display Kit is hardware-identical to the 1st Gen panel (same 16" 2560×1600, 165 Hz, 500 nit, 100 % DCI-P3) — the only difference is firmware that enables NVIDIA G-Sync and Advanced Optimus. The 1st Gen display cannot be firmware-upgraded11. Without the 2nd Gen Display Kit, putting an RTX 5070 in an original FW16 yields only standard Windows Optimus. G-Sync and Advanced Optimus both require the RTX 5070 + Display Kit 2nd Gen combination12.
Known Issues
- USB-C UCSI errors on Linux — Kernel 6.9+ produces
GET_CABLE_PROPERTY failederror messages on boot and when plugging/unplugging USB-C devices. See the full problem page for details. - USB-A Expansion Card stops working — Port 5 may lose connection after sleep/resume, requiring the expansion card to be reseated. See the full problem page for details.
- fTPM false-reset prompts on boot — "Press Y to reset fTPM" appears with no actual hardware change; tracked in GitHub issue #175, unresolved as of BIOS 3.0413.
- RTX 5070 idle power draw on Linux — The dGPU idles at ~5 W instead of entering D3cold sleep on some Linux setups; hybrid mode reports 21–25 W total vs 8–12 W iGPU-only. Discord, Steam,
nvtop, and X11 login managers keep the dGPU awake1415. - Suspend/resume broken on Ubuntu 26.04 / kernel 7.0 — System hangs on s2idle resume with
nvidia-opendriver loaded; only hard reset recovers. Not Framework-specific (reproduced on Lenovo ThinkPad with the same RTX 5070 Max-Q)16.
