Framework Laptop 16 (AMD Ryzen 7040, 2024)

The Framework Laptop 16 is a larger, performance-oriented laptop announced at the Next Level event in March 202312. It features an expansion bay that can attach PCIe components such as a dedicated GPU2, a fully customizable keyboard with interchangeable input modules and optional numpad3, and 6 expansion card slots4. Initially planned to ship in Q4 2023, it began shipping in February 20245 with AMD Ryzen 7040 series processors. It was named a TIME Best Invention of 20236.

Partially discontinued

The Ryzen 9 7940HS configuration has been wound down (limited stock remaining), but Framework has kept the Ryzen 7 7840HS in production as a lower-cost entry point7. All current Expansion Bay modules — including the RTX 5070 and the OCuLink Dev Kit — remain backwards-compatible with the 7040 mainboard.

Expansion Bay

The expansion bay enables users to swap discrete GPUs2 and other PCIe modules. Options include:

  • Default shell (no dGPU)
  • AMD Radeon RX 7700S Graphics Module (8 GB GDDR6) — original; 2nd Gen refresh has improved fans and PTM7950 thermal pad
  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop Graphics Module (8 GB GDDR7) — Blackwell, 30–40 % faster than 7700S, 100 W sustained TGP, Honeywell PTM; shipments Nov 20257
  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop Graphics Module (12 GB GDDR7) — shipments from June 202616
  • Dual M.2 adapter (2 additional NVMe SSDs)10
  • Framework OCuLink Dev Kit — PCIe x8 (128 Gbps) for external GPUs/peripherals (pre-order)17
BIOS requirement

Using the Nvidia RTX 5070 Graphics Module requires BIOS 4.02 or later18.

Known Issues

  • USB-C UCSI errors on Linux — Kernel 6.9+ produces GET_CABLE_PROPERTY failed error messages on boot and when plugging/unplugging USB-C devices. See the full problem page for details.
  • Battery flipping between charging and discharging — Battery status rapidly oscillates when on AC power with a charge limit set, causing microcycling, LED flicker, and dock disconnections. See the full problem page for details.
  • USB-A Expansion Card stops working — Ports 5 and 6 may lose connection after sleep/resume or repeated device plug/unplug cycles, requiring the expansion card to be reseated. See the full problem page for details.
  • RX 7700S dGPU vanishes after sleep/resume — Module not detected in device manager / lspci after resume; BIOS sees Expansion Bay EEPROM but not the GPU. Reseat module + interposer, perform an EC/battery-disconnect reset, or downgrade BIOS. Some users require RMA19.
  • Charge limit ignored — Battery charges to 90–96 % despite a 60/80 % BIOS limit. Cause: Battery Life Extender (introduced in BIOS 3.05) overrides the manual limit. Workaround: disable Battery Life Extender20.
  • USB-PD charging regression in BIOS 4.03+ — 0 W charging, PD negotiation loop, "plugged/unplugged" sound. Workaround: battery-disconnect/EC reset, or downgrade to LVFS 0.0.3.721.
