DC-ROMA RISC-V Mainboard II

The DC-ROMA RISC-V Mainboard II (also called the DC-ROMA RISC-V AI PC) is the second-generation RISC-V mainboard for the Framework Laptop 13 by DeepComputing1. Powered by an ESWIN EIC7702X SoC with a dual-die 8-core SiFive P550 CPU and a 40 TOPS NPU, it is the world's first RISC-V AI PC capable of running large language models locally123.

Developer-Focused Hardware

This mainboard is aimed at developers and early adopters. Reviewers report ~25 W idle power consumption, significantly higher than x86/ARM alternatives. Battery life is limited to roughly 2–3 hours, and overall performance is described as "about the performance of a Raspberry Pi"45.

Software

Pre-installed with Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS, supporting local LLM execution via optimized APIs and open-source toolchains. Use cases include on-device chatbots, media AI, and audio/video synthesis without cloud dependency23.

OS Support Limitation

The SiFive P550 cores inside the ESWIN EIC7702X do not implement the RVA23 profile, which Canonical has adopted as the minimum baseline for Ubuntu on RISC-V. As a result, the board is effectively locked to Ubuntu 24.10 — newer releases (such as 25.10 and later) will not run on it4.

A teardown by Jeff Geerling confirmed the EIC7702X is a dual-die chiplet design on an interposer: two EIC7700X-class dies share LPDDR5 across an inter-die cache-coherency interconnect. Cross-die memory latency was measured at roughly 1,000 ns — an order of magnitude higher than same-die accesses — which contributes to the board's poor efficiency under multi-core workloads4.

Availability

Announced March 2025 at Embedded World EU, with pre-orders at $299 and delivery starting Q3 202512. Sold both as a standalone mainboard and as a full Framework Laptop 13 build through the DeepComputing store3. Community member Jeff Geerling published a detailed review in December 2025, reporting marked CPU improvement over the original JH7110 but ~25 W idle power, 2–3 hour battery life, and Raspberry-Pi-class everyday performance (full Framework 13 build tested at $1,119)45. YouTuber Lifting Linux (CJ) published a separate hands-on review in late November 2025, highlighting successful local LLM inference (DeepSeek-R1-7B) on the 40 TOPS NPU6.
